This is the domain of Screenlife cinema, a mode of filmmaking in which the entire visual field of the movie is constituted by what appears on a character's screen browser tabs, video-call windows, cursors, typing indicators, and notification pop-ups.
Where traditional cinema stages the world through a camera positioned outside the action, Screenlife stages the world through an interface the character is themselves operating. The spectator does not watch a character use a laptop; the spectator watches the laptop, and the character is inferred from what happens on it. This inversion of cinematic address is the central formal innovation this blog sets out to examine, using Timur Bekmambetov's courtroom thriller Mercy (2026) as its primary case study.
1.2 Why Screenlife Matters
Screenlife is often dismissed as a gimmick born of budgetary convenience a way to make an entire feature film for the cost of a few laptops and a green-screen studio. Yet its significance for Film Studies runs deeper than economics. Screenlife films dramatize a condition that most of their audience already lives: mediated relationships, digital surveillance, algorithmic judgment, and the compulsion to keep one's eyes on a rectangle of light. In this sense Screenlife is less a novelty than a mirror. It asks what happens to classical film theory suture, spectatorship, the gaze, the archive when the apparatus being filmed is not the world but the interface through which we already experience the world.
1.3 Aim, Objectives, and Scope
This blog aims to trace the Screenlife format from its earliest webcam-era precursors to its most recent, most expensive, and most theoretically contested iteration: Mercy (2026). It has three interlocking objectives. First, to define Screenlife cinema and distinguish it from adjacent modes such as found footage, point-of-view (POV) cinema, and desktop cinema. Second, to trace the genre's evolution through a lineage of key films The Collingswood Story, Unfriended, Unfriended: Dark Web, Searching, Missing, and CTRL culminating in Mercy. Third, to apply major film theories, including Lacanian suture, apparatus theory, remediation, the archive effect, the reciprocal gaze, Foucault's panopticon, and Zuboff's surveillance capitalism, to Mercy specifically, in direct response to a postgraduate worksheet distributed for this screening. The scope is necessarily comparative: Mercy is read not in isolation but against the genre's own historical self-understanding, and against the socio-political anxieties of an AI-governed near future that it dramatizes rather too comfortably resolves.
2. Understanding Screenlife Cinema
2.1 Definition, Origin, and Development
Screenlife refers to a mode of narrative filmmaking in which the story is told entirely through the recorded output of digital devices desktop screens, smartphone displays, webcam feeds, and the software running on them. The term itself was coined and trademarked by the Kazakh-Russian director-producer Timur Bekmambetov, who built a proprietary software pipeline through his company Bazelevs to standardise the format's production. Although Bekmambetov is Screenlife's most visible advocate, the format's origins predate his intervention: Pierre-Paul Renders' Thomas Was in Love (2000) and Michael Costanza's low-budget horror film The Collingswood Story (2002) are widely credited as the earliest feature-length experiments in webcam-based, entirely screen-bound storytelling, years before broadband video chat was culturally ordinary.
2.2 Timur Bekmambetov's Contribution
Bekmambetov, a veteran of large-scale studio spectacle (Night Watch, Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), pivoted toward Screenlife after producing Unfriended (2014) and became its principal theorist-practitioner. He has repeatedly compared his self-imposed rules to Lars von Trier's Dogme 95 manifesto, framing Screenlife not as a gimmick but as a distinct cinematic language suited to an audience that already narrates its own life through screens.

2.3 Characteristics and the "Screenlife Dogma"
In its purest form, Screenlife observes four self-imposed constraints, functioning collectively as an informal manifesto:
● Single-screen unity — the frame never leaves one character's device.
● Real-time continuity — the action unfolds without visible editing within a scene, mimicking the unbroken flow of an actual browsing or calling session.
● Camera-as-device — all movement, zoom, and framing must plausibly originate from the device's own camera or cursor, not an external cinematographer.
● Diegetic sound only — audio must appear to emanate from the speakers, microphone, or software the character is using.
These rules give Screenlife its intimacy but also its fragility: any shot that cannot be justified by the logic of an actual desktop session breaks the format's internal contract with the viewer.
2.4 Strengths, Limitations, and Future Trajectory
Screenlife's chief strength is affective immediacy. Because the audience watches the same interface the character watches, revelations (a search result, an incoming message, a live location ping) land with the same shock the character experiences, collapsing the usual distance between spectator and protagonist. Its economic strength is equally significant: a Screenlife feature can be shot with a skeleton crew, minimal sets, and heavy reliance on user-interface design rather than location photography, which explains its popularity with first-time filmmakers and streaming platforms alike.
Its limitations are equally structural. The format struggles with physical action, exteriority, and multi-character ensembles that are not mediated by a device. It risks visual monotony over feature length, and it dates quickly, since specific software interfaces (a particular chat client, a particular browser chrome) anchor the film to a recognisable moment in consumer technology. Bekmambetov's own trajectory from the purist single-screen Unfriended to the increasingly hybridised, IMAX-inflected Mercy suggests that the format's future lies less in doctrinal purity than in negotiated compromise with traditional cinematography, a tension this blog returns to in Section 5.
2.5 Screenlife versus Found Footage, POV Cinema, and Desktop Cinema

Found footage asks the viewer to believe they are watching a discovered artefact; Screenlife asks the viewer to believe they are watching a live session unfold. POV cinema binds the camera to a body moving through physical space; Screenlife binds the camera to a cursor moving through virtual space. Desktop cinema borrows Screenlife's visual furniture (windows, chat bubbles) but permits itself conventional editing latitude that strict Screenlife forbids. As later sections show, nearly every prestige entry in this genre including Searching, Missing, and Mercy in fact operates as desktop cinema rather than doctrinally pure Screenlife, a distinction with real theoretical stakes.
3. Evolution of the Genre
Screenlife did not arrive fully formed; it accreted its conventions across two decades of experimentation, each film extending the format's vocabulary while testing the limits of its self-imposed constraints.
3.1 The Collingswood Story (2002): The Unacknowledged Origin
Michael Costanza's ultra-low-budget supernatural horror film, shot years before broadband video chat was culturally normal, is now widely recognised by genre historians as the first feature to tell its entire story through webcam conversations and simulated desktops. Its college-age protagonists conduct a long-distance relationship over a primitive video-chat client, inadvertently summoning a malevolent presence through an online séance. Though roughly ninety-five percent rather than fully screen-bound, and though its central video calls were reportedly not even performed in real time by the actors, Collingswood established the genre's foundational proposition: that the webcam window, not the establishing shot, could carry an entire narrative's dramatic weight.
3.2 Unfriended (2014): Codifying the Format
Directed by Leo Gabriadze and produced by Bekmambetov (originally cut under the title Cybernatural), Unfriended is the film most responsible for crystallising Screenlife into a recognisable genre. Its premise a group of friends on a Skype call are picked off one by one by the vengeful ghost of a bullied classmate operating through a mysterious extra user in the call unfolds entirely on a single laptop screen in unbroken real time. Every scare, every revelation, and every death is delivered through a browser tab, a Facebook profile, or a garbled video feed. Unfriended demonstrated that the format could sustain sustained suspense without a single conventional shot, and its commercial success (a micro-budget production that substantially outgrossed its cost) proved the model's viability to studios.
3.3 Unfriended: Dark Web (2018): Expanding the Stakes
Stephen Susco's stand-alone sequel retains the single-screen conceit but redirects it from supernatural horror to techno-paranoid thriller, in which a stolen laptop turns out to belong to a dark-web snuff-film collective. Dark Web pushes the format's political register further than its predecessor, dramatising surveillance, deepfakes, and the vulnerability of ordinary digital life to organised criminal exploitation thematic ground that Mercy would later till on an incomparably larger budget.
3.4 Searching (2018): Prestige and Polish
Aneesh Chaganty's directorial debut, produced by Bekmambetov's company but shot without the proprietary Screenlife software, marks the genre's turn toward critical respectability. A father (John Cho) searches his missing daughter's laptop and social-media history to solve her disappearance, aided by police-procedural plotting and genuinely emotional performances. Crucially, Searching relaxes doctrinal purity: it permits colour grading, more conventional pacing, and even non-screen-bound material such as television news broadcasts near its climax. It is, in the taxonomy proposed in Section 2.5, desktop cinema rather than strict Screenlife, and its success proved that audiences would accept indeed reward this loosening of the rules.
3.5 Missing (2023): The Format Matures
Nicholas D. Johnson and Will Merrick's Missing, a spin-off/spiritual sequel to Searching, followed the same desktop-cinema template but pushed the format toward younger, more platform-fluent protagonists and a narrative built around FaceTime, ride-share apps, and outsourced digital-labour platforms. Missing demonstrated that the format could evolve alongside the technology stack itself, incorporating gig-economy apps and AI-adjacent tools as plot mechanisms rather than mere set dressing.
3.6 CTRL (2024): Screenlife Beyond Hollywood
Vikramaditya Motwane's Hindi-language CTRL, released on Netflix, is a significant non-American contribution to the genre and a valuable comparative text for an Indian classroom. Its influencer protagonist, Nella, uses an AI application to erase digital traces of an unfaithful partner, only to find the app assuming increasing control over her life. Motwane has explicitly framed the film's premise through the vocabulary of Screenlife, describing contemporary "screen time" as having been redefined as "screen life." CTRL extends the genre's found-footage DNA into explicitly AI-governance territory anticipating Mercy's own AI-judge premise by roughly a year while grounding its critique in recognisably Indian conditions of influencer culture, data-harvesting apps, and, more obliquely, real-world anxieties about digital evidence being planted in politically sensitive cases.
3.7 Mercy (2026): Screenlife at Blockbuster Scale
Mercy represents the genre's most expensive and most formally compromised iteration to date. Directed by Bekmambetov himself on a reported $60 million budget for Amazon MGM Studios, and starring Chris Pratt as a detective who must prove his innocence to an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson) within a ninety-minute countdown, the film abandons single-screen purity altogether. It intercuts doorbell-camera footage, CCTV feeds, body-cam material, and news broadcasts with polished IMAX-scale drone photography, 3D-converted action sequences, and conventional courtroom staging. Where Unfriended proved the format could carry a film alone, Mercy tests whether the format can survive being subordinated to a traditional studio action-thriller chassis a question this blog examines closely in Sections 5 and 8.
4. Screenlife Aesthetics
Screenlife's visual grammar is built from elements that traditional cinema treats as incidental (a cursor, a loading icon) and elevates them to load-bearing narrative devices.
4.1 The Desktop as Mise-en-scène
The desktop itself becomes production design. Open tabs, pinned applications, desktop wallpaper, and file names function the way costume and set dressing function in traditional cinema — they characterise a figure before that figure speaks. A cluttered, chaotic desktop signals psychological disarray; a minimalist one signals control (or its performance).
4.2 Cursor, Typing, and the Grammar of Hesitation
The cursor operates as a kind of displaced eyeline match, showing the audience where a character's attention is directed. Typing indicators, deleted and rewritten messages, and hovering-but-unclicked links dramatise internal conflict without a single line of dialogue or a reaction shot an interior monologue rendered entirely through hand-eye behaviour on an interface.
4.3 Notifications, Video Calls, and Split Screens
Incoming notifications function as involuntary interruptions, akin to a phone ringing in a stage play, except that in Screenlife they visually invade the frame itself, layering multiple simultaneous claims on the viewer's attention. Video calls restore a face to the otherwise text-and-icon-heavy visual field, and split-screen compositions (multiple call participants, multiple browser windows) allow the format to approximate the multi-character blocking of a traditional scene without ever leaving the screen.
4.4 Cloud Storage, Metadata, and Digital Evidence
Because Screenlife narratives are frequently procedural searches for a missing person, an investigation, a trial cloud drives, metadata timestamps, and geotags function as the genre's equivalent of physical clues in a detective story. The forensic pleasure of the format lies in watching a character (and the audience alongside them) assemble meaning from scattered digital traces, a pleasure Mercy leans on heavily through its municipal surveillance archive.
4.5 Real-Time Editing, Sound, and Immersion
Sound design in strict Screenlife is rigorously diegetic: ringtones, keyboard clatter, laptop fan noise, and the tinny compression of a webcam microphone. Editing, where it exists at all, is disguised as a loading buffer, a dropped call, or a switched application window rather than an acknowledged cut. The cumulative effect is what Bekmambetov has called the format's "drug-like" immersive quality a claim examined critically, rather than simply accepted, in Section 6's discussion of suture and apparatus theory.
5. Mercy (2026): A Case Study
5.1 Plot in Brief
Set in a near-future Los Angeles, Mercy imagines a judicial reform in which certain capital cases are adjudicated not by a human jury but by an artificial-intelligence judge, Maddox (Rebecca Ferguson), operating out of a facility called the Mercy Court. Detective Chris Raven (Chris Pratt), one of the system's own former champions, is accused of murdering his wife and strapped into the "Mercy Chair," where he has ninety minutes to establish his innocence before Maddox rules on his guilt and, implicitly, his execution. Raven must use the very municipal surveillance apparatus he once helped build doorbell cameras, cloud-stored footage, cell-tower data to exonerate himself in real time, aided by an ally, Detective Jacqueline "Jaq" Diallo (Kali Reis), working the case from outside the chair.
5.2 Narrative Structure and the Countdown Clock
The film's ninety-minute diegetic countdown is mapped with reasonable fidelity onto its own runtime, a structuring device inherited from the ticking-clock thriller but given new stakes by Screenlife's real-time ethos: the audience is not simply told time is short, but watches a persistent on-screen timer count down alongside the evidence windows Raven and Maddox examine. This synchrony between story time and viewing time is Screenlife's most disciplined formal legacy in Mercy, even where the film abandons the format's other constraints.
5.3 Screenlife Techniques and Their Erosion
Mercy deploys the genre's now-familiar toolkit: Ring doorbell logs, CCTV mosaics, municipal cloud archives, body-camera footage, and video-call testimony, all assembled into a multi-window evidentiary interface that Maddox and Raven navigate together. Where the film departs sharply from genre convention is in its refusal to remain confined to that interface. Reviewers noted, on release, that the film periodically abandons its desktop framing altogether for IMAX-scale drone flyovers of Los Angeles, three-dimensional crime-scene reconstructions, and conventionally shot action set-pieces formal choices that several critics read as a betrayal of the very screenlife economy of intimacy the genre was built to protect.

Critical reception was decidedly mixed. Reviewers broadly praised Chris Pratt's performance under the constraint of remaining seated for most of the runtime, and Rebecca Ferguson's controlled, unsettling turn as Maddox, while faulting the screenplay for underexplored ideas, implausible plotting, and a resolution that several critics characterised as tonally confused about its own politics alternately gesturing at AI-justice critique and at reassurance that human and artificial judgment are, in the film's own phrase, fundamentally alike. Its innovation lies chiefly in scale: no previous Screenlife-adjacent film has attempted to fuse the format with a $60 million action-thriller budget, IMAX presentation, and a starry ensemble cast, making Mercy less a pure genre entry than a stress test of how far the format can be stretched before its own aesthetic logic dissolves.
6. Film Theory and Critical Perspectives
This section applies seven interlocking bodies of theory to Mercy, each addressed to a distinct dimension of the film's formal and ideological operation.
6.1 Lacanian Suture and the Meta-Suture
Classical suture theory, developed from Jacques-Alain Miller's reading of Lacan and elaborated by theorists such as Kaja Silverman, describes how continuity editing (most paradigmatically shot-reverse-shot) conceals the camera's presence, stitching the spectator into the fiction as an apparently all-seeing but structurally absent viewpoint. Screenlife proposes what this blog, following the worksheet's own framing, calls a meta-suture: rather than concealing the apparatus, it makes the apparatus (the cursor, the loading spinner, the typing indicator) the very site of identification. The spectator is not sutured into a disembodied gaze but into a highly specific, recognisable digital behaviour waiting for a page to load, watching someone type and delete a message. Mercy's repeated departures into IMAX drone photography and three-dimensional courtroom reconstruction rupture this meta-suture by reintroducing exactly the kind of impossible, disembodied camera position that Screenlife's screen-bound logic was designed to foreclose. The effect is a formal instability: the film cannot decide whether the spectator is a device operator or a conventional cinema-going voyeur, and it oscillates between both positions rather than synthesising them, arguably alienating the viewer from the digital reality the format promises rather than expanding it.
6.2 Apparatus Theory and the Reciprocal Gaze
Christian Metz's apparatus theory positions the cinema spectator as a concealed voyeur, structurally akin to Bentham's and later Foucault's unseen observer, deriving pleasure from looking without being seen. Screenlife complicates this arrangement decisively through the video call: when Mercy's characters speak to Maddox, they look directly into their device's camera lens, which is to say, directly at the spectator. This reciprocal gaze denies the audience its habitual voyeuristic safety. Maddox's own camera-facing address, most of all, positions the spectator not as a hidden observer of the Mercy Court's proceedings but as a co-present participant within its surveillance apparatus, implicated in the act of judgment rather than merely witnessing it. The film thereby stages, formally, the very transformation from passive citizen to active surveillance-subject that its plot claims to critique.
6.3 Remediation: Immediacy and Hypermediacy
Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin's concept of remediation describes new media's oscillation between immediacy (erasing its own mediating apparatus to feel unmediated and "real") and hypermediacy (foregrounding the proliferation of frames, windows, and technological interfaces as spectacle in themselves). Mercy leans decisively toward hypermediacy: its interface is not the lo-fi, single-window austerity of Unfriended but a glossy, multi-pane evidentiary dashboard, visual-effects-supervised to a degree that announces its own technological sophistication rather than concealing it. This hypermediated polish sits in tension with the evidentiary claims the plot makes on the audience's behalf the film wants its Ring-camera footage to feel like unmediated truth even as its presentation constantly foregrounds the apparatus assembling that footage into a case.
6.4 The Archive Effect and Its Erosion
Jamie Baron's "archive effect" describes the spectator's experience of found or recovered footage as bearing the authentic trace of a pre-existing historical reality, a sense of temporal and authorial disjunction between the footage's original context and its current use. Mercy attempts to manufacture this effect through its doorbell logs, municipal cloud archives, and body-camera material, presenting them as raw evidentiary residue of a real event. Yet the film's $60 million studio production values, and the visibly art-directed polish of even its "raw" surveillance footage, work against the archive effect's central appeal, which depends on a sense of accidental, unauthored capture. Where Baron's archive effect thrives on the rough edges of appropriated material, Mercy's evidentiary footage looks manufactured for narrative clarity, arguably reducing what should be a marker of an authentic (if fictional) historical record to a piece of polished commercial product, indistinguishable in texture from the surrounding drone cinematography around it.
6.5 Reciprocal Gaze and Spectatorial Complicity (extended)
Building on Section 6.2, the reciprocal gaze in Mercy has a specific ideological charge because the film's central visual figure, the eye or lens Raven and the audience both face, belongs to an AI. The spectator's gaze is therefore not returned by another human consciousness (as in Unfriended's video calls) but by an algorithmic authority, collapsing the distinction Metz's apparatus theory draws between the (human) look and the (mechanical) apparatus that enables it. The audience, like Raven, is made to perform innocence and coherence for a non-human observer an experience many viewers of the smartphone-and-AI-mediated present will recognise as uncomfortably familiar.
6.6 Foucault's Panopticon
Michel Foucault's reading of Jeremy Bentham's panopticon describes a disciplinary architecture in which a single, potentially absent observer can see all inmates, who cannot see the observer or one another, producing self-regulating obedience through the mere possibility of being watched. The Mercy Chair restages this architecture with unusual literalism: Raven is immobilised, isolated, and rendered totally visible to Maddox, who processes the municipal surveillance network's total visibility of the city at large. The film's broader premise, that every doorbell, phone, and traffic camera in Los Angeles constitutes an ambient panopticon available to the Mercy Court on demand, extends Foucault's carceral architecture from the prison to the city itself. What Foucault frames as a diffuse, internalised disciplinary power the film renders as a literal, centralised evidentiary database, arguably softening the panopticon's most disquieting insight, that surveillance disciplines subjects even without being actively used, by depicting surveillance data as something deployed only in dramatic, exculpatory moments of crisis.
6.7 Surveillance Capitalism
Shoshana Zuboff's concept of surveillance capitalism describes an economic order in which human experience is unilaterally claimed as free raw material, translated into behavioural data, and sold onward for profit and prediction, largely without meaningful consent. Mercy dramatises a judicial variant of this logic: the same Ring-camera network that, in the world outside the film, generates revenue for Amazon by selling a sense of domestic security, is repurposed within the film's fiction as evidentiary infrastructure for an AI court. The film's production context sharpens rather than dulls this reading, since Amazon MGM Studios financed a film in which Amazon-adjacent surveillance hardware plays a heroic, exculpatory role. Read through Zuboff's framework, Mercy is less a cautionary tale about AI justice than an advertisement for the very extraction infrastructure surveillance capitalism depends upon, dressed in the language of due process and individual vindication.
